Im more than satisfied with my Marlin 17vs, its stainless/laminate and looks great imho. I think all the 17s are all good quality that are being made, just pick the one you like that best that you can afford. I was looking at some Savages without the heavy barrel and they felt nice at 239$. I gave 309$ for my Marlin vs.

I just got a savage m 93 stainless, w/ a heavy barrle. it comes free floated, bedded, and with weaver mounts. for $150 i love it. i put a bsa 6-18 sweet 17 on it, and it shoots great. the scope is made just for the 17hmr, with adjustable turrets to compensate with the bullet drop of the hmr's 17 grain bullet. check it out at www.bsaoptics.com!!!!! it was $130 from cabelas.

I have the Marlin 17V, paid around $180 for it about one year ago. My opinion I felt the Marlin was a little higher quality, better fit and finish than the Savage. I lightened the trigger and that is all, this rifle is capiable of sub MOA accuracy, on the same note my shooting buddy bought the Savage and it shoots just as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either, it is a matter of what feels better to you. Enjoy, the 17's are addicting!
