Can you shoot slugs through the nova, or do you have to buy a slug barrel

If you use an Improved Cylanider choke you can shoot slugs. Ithaca makes a fully rifled barrel for the Nova with an attached scope mount. I think Cabelas carries them for about $150. (somewhere in that ball park)
