I've used a buddy of mines several times and it will save you some ammo. His is the one that goes in the breech instead of the muzzle and seems to do a good job of getting you on target. But as with all of the bore-sighters I've used, you'll still need to send a few more rounds downrange to get a good zero.

If you use bolts. When at your range drop the bolt & adjustment caps then clamp in a gun vise, range rest or on some sand bags, look down the bore at a target 25 or 100 yards (at 100 yards we put an orange stick on dot in the bull-just makes it easier to see), centre the bore on the dot, then simply adjust the scope to same object..finto. You'll still require the fine tuning shots but no different than a bore sighting device.
If you really want a bore sighter or will be sighting in pumps, autos or sealed breech ML take a look at the Bushnell Professional(or banner) Series Bore Sighter it has the adjustable arbours to ensure a snug fit. Comes with 3 arbours up to 45 cal and a 50 cal/shotgun arbour can also be purchased.

I have one that points from the muzzle and all it's been successful at is getting me on paper. But I guess you cannot really ask more than that. Like the others have said, it will save some ammo.

They are a waste of money unless you use them in a lever or semi-auto where you can't look through the bore from the rear.
Like skeeter said if its a bolt just take out the bolt and lok down the barrel and adjust your scope.
