My dad shot a nice whitetail buck with a .22 lr years ago, and I dropped a decent doe this coon season with the same gun. It was an accident, damn thing jumped out of the creek right on top of me, scared the crap out of me so I reflexively shot, got her right under the chin, shooting from the hip.

340.....I once saw a program on 20/20 as I recall about this guy who just left society and moved to Alaska. He knew nothing about the wild etc...

He only brought with him a .22 rimfire, which as I recall was a .22Win mag....

ANYWAYS... He took a photo of himself carrying away a big piece of meat from a Moose he shot with that gun. Must have been a brain shot from what I figured.

After several months, he died and authorities found his body in an abandoned school bus which had been converted into a little hunter's base camp/cabin. The guy was keeping a diary of how he was basically starving to death and had no strengh getting out of his bed.

They discovered that he was eating some type of root or berry that basically stopped one's digestive process from working correctly, thus resulting in a person taking in food, but can't get any nutrition out of it. He died of starvation/poisoning.

-Just a little trivia.

This is based on the book "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer ("Into Thin Air&quot. He's a writer for Outside magazine that did a small article on this kid. He got hooked and ended writing a whole book. It's a great read if your interesed.

According to Sports Afield, Eskimos used to hunt polar bears with .22 hornet if I remember, I know it was a .22, but I'm not for sure on the hornet part, I thought it was a rimfire case, but I'm not familiar with many .22 cals other than LR and .222

Am I missing something here? “so I reflexively shot” “shooting from the hip” Glad I'm not out in the woods there with my children.

This is not a wise thread. In most states it is illegal to shoot deer with a rimfire, and at best it is unwise to shoot deer-sized game with a .22 cal. Let's not give the anti's any more ammo.
