Savage 111 7mm mag
Any feedback on the Savage 111 7mm mag or any 7mm mag for that matter.
Still shopping around for new toy for big game. Everytime I feel that I like one caliber, I find another one that would suit me better. Looking for a versatile deer/bear gun that shoots straight but also has the knock down power. Any suggestions on the above would be appreciated.

Assuming you mean black bear, just about any of the 30's will work fine. A 7 mm Rem mag is fine too. Black bear hunting isn't a long range proposition unless you are in pretty open country and can glass for them.
I really like some of the bigger calibers like .348 .35 .356 .358 .375 .444 .45/70. There are many to pick from, but the thing is, any of these will easily handle deer and black bear at ranges out to 150 yds. For longer ranges, I'd go to .308, '06 and the like. Then there are all the magnums. I do like Savages, great value in a working rifle.

The 7mm Mag is a great choice. It will serve you well in the NE and, if you ever plan to hunt out west, it would make a good long range gun. The .25-06, .270Win and the like will also shoot flat, but if you want a long distance elk rifle, you'd be well served with a 7mm Mag. The 300 and 338 magnums would be even better for long range elk but some might consider them over kill in Pennsylvania. I wouldn't - but some would. Another consideration is ammo availability. The .30-06 and 7mm Mag are readily available. One other question? Would you ever want to go to Canada and hunt moose?

Joe,
I have a Savage 110 in 7mm mag and I love it, Its not the prettiest gun i own BUT out of the 6 "Deer" caliber rifles i own, it is my best shooter with factory ammo, I have been able to shoot better groups with my Ruger 77 mkII 7mm mag with hand loads, but for an inexpensive off the shelf ammo shooter you cant beat the Savages. One note if you buy the Savage package that comes with the scope and rings you may want to replace the rings with a high quality set of Leupold or similar rings and bases, after about 3 boxes of factory ammo I examined the rings and found the screws that hold the rings to the base were severly bent!!
just my opinion, but hey opinions are like...well you know
