They have been making good bullets for a very long time, and their 140gr supreme failsafe is a perfect choice for deer, muleys, or elk.

150 Nolser partition or 140 grain failsafe will work in the 270. Both of these bullets have accounted for Moose and Elk in my past using the 270 win, although I would limit shooting distance and angles.

I like the Corelokt Ultras and the A-frame bullets myself. I have never had a problem with either of the two. I have heard some pretty bad stuff about the plain Corelokt bullets though.

Use the premium bullets, if possible try to hook up w/ someone who can reload for you and it will definately be worth your while. The 270 isnt ideal for anything bigger than deer(yeah I know...I killed blah, blah, blah w/ my 270... my dad also dropped a 52"moose w/ a 6mm rem, but he also was willing to pass on shots that weren't ideal), but premium bullets will really help. I think he should hunt w/ the rifle on this hunt, how many 1st elk will he shoot? Then have it appraised and let him decide if he wants to use it, grandpa would be proud for his rifle to take the grandsons first elk.

NVMIKE I do reload and have offered to reload for Jim but he wants to shoot factory only! To be honest I am kind of relieved because I am preparing for 2 elk hunts for myself this year. One archery and one rifle and my Wife's and Jims elk hunt, and with work, two kids, well it doesn't leave much time to help a friend work up a load for his gun. Not saying that I wouldn't make time to ensure he had a quality load. But I think I have him almost convinced to buy premiun factory ammo for his hunt.
