I don't know enough about the ability of the barrel on the Striker to handle a wide range of bullet weights. If the Striker can handle a fairly wide range of .284 bullet weights and stabilize them satisfactorily then I'd recommend going with the 7mm/08 and getting into handloading. It would give you a great deal of versatility. Kinda spliting the difference between the .243 and the .308!
Actually, really splitting the difference would be a diameter of .2755 .....so why not look into the .270?? Its a .277
I know it doesn't have quite as many bullets available for it,....but again....I don't know how much lee-way the Striker barrels give you on stabilizing different bullet weights. Maybe some of the hand-cannon aficianados here will steer you in the right direction.

I have not shot the Striker, but I shot a Contender in 7MM-08. It is a great deer caliber for rifle or handgun!

7mm-08 is a great caliber. It's gaining popularity, so there will be plenty of bullet choices around.

My choice would be the .308 but only for one reason....factory ammo. The 7mm-08 is equal to the .308 in almost every aspect, except for the variety of factory loads available. If you handload this may not pose a problem, and you would probably find a good load anyway for the 7mm,but why limit yourself?Either way I really don't think you can go wrong, except for the .243.Now,I know it has it's fans, but out of a handgun barrel,I don't think you can get full performance out of what many people consider a marginal deer cartridge out of a rifle.Good luck and good huntin'....

bull1870,

As a full blown hand cannon nut (Contenders and Encores here) I would go with the 308 if you don’t reload. The 308 can be found at every gun shop in the country with a very good selection of loads. The 7mm08 is a fine round and would be my first choice for a reloader as you can really tailor it for the shorter handgun barrels. I love the .243 and have taken a bunch of deer with it but out of a handgun I think it's a little light.

Before you plop down your hard earned cash on a Striker I would take one more long hard look at the Contender. There is a very good reason they are the #1 single shot in the world.

Bull1870,
If you are only hunting deer I would recommend the 7mm-08, it is a great cartridge, particularly for a first gun of this type because recoil is not bad at all. The 308 can be a little more difficult to handle for some shooters (heavier bullets, more recoil). Either way you will probably find that your best results will come from handloads, with a faster burning powder. Some factory loads have excessive muzzle blast due to powders designed for longer barrels. Another option if you don't handload is to buy CorBon loads that are designed in these (and other) caliber specifically for short barrel "hand rifles".

Quilly,
Savage almost uses the same rate of twist for both rounds, they use a 1 in 10" twist for a 308 and a 1 in 9.5" for a 7mm-08. But, since this is a "hand rifle", as some call it, there will be a velocity loss from the short barrel which would limit the range on both calibers.

Steelshooter,
The only advantage I can tell that the contender has over the savage is the fact that you can change out barrels (which is a big advantage don't get me wrong). But for the price difference the Savage is a great gun, and will shoot with any contender/encore pistol that I have shot, and you are absolutely right the Contender/Encore is the #1 single shot pistol in the world, and it is a great gun, but the Savage isn't a single shot

Sorry the post is so long, but I love to talk about the hand cannons

I have a T/C Encore 15" in the 7mm-08 and it works well on deer! I use 120gr Hornandy SSP bullet (single shot pistol),it has a lighter jacket for quick expanson. Let me know if you want the load...

Hunt Safe!

I purchased a Remington Stainless synthetic DM in a 7m-08 and absolutely love it. I shoot very nice groups at 100 yards. There is very little recoil and therefore takes any flinch factor out, especially for younger or novice hunters. However, adult and experience hunters are the ones making this caliber so newly popular. In saying all that , Having shot both the 7m-08 and the 308, I think that there is very little difference between the two. Both are excellent choices for whitetail.
