Default Sako 75 SS in 7 STW

Well this will make Sako number 3 for me. I swore up and down I wouldn't buy another Sako but this deal was too good to pass up. Now to pick out Scope mounts and a scope to put on it. Anyone own one and how do they like it?

I own 2 Sako 75's and they are easily my favorite rifles. One's a .300 Weatherby and the other's a 7mm Rem Mag. I've got a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 in Sako Optilock rings on the .300 Wby and a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 in Conetrol rings on the 7 mag. BTW, both of mine are the pre bolt lock versions.

SM..are they blued or stainless? I am betting the Conetrols sit lower a lot lower. How is eye relief with both of your scopes?

Oldelk, why don't ya like sakos? Too heavy? Or cause its Euro? Cause its Euro is the reason for me. Sounds like you got ya a nice rig with the STW. Let us know how it shoots.

BC.. Well first one I had 30-06 fiberclass was a very good gun in fact I wish I had it now..reflecting back on it I never handloaded for it and really never really had it scoped right and there were too many other brands calling my name . The second one M-591 308 win should have been a good gun too . The bedding job from the factory was not very good or the first owner hosed it up beyond recognition so I had it rebedded and the gun butcher that did it buried the detachable lug under the compound and left a noticeable gap between magazine box and floorplate. Rather then send it back and wait 3 months for him to repair it I ended up trading it out. Prior to the bedding job it was a good 1 - 1 1/2 inch gun. I have always liked the SS 75 in fact I almost bought one 7 years ago for 750 bucks new but the dealer wouldn't deal with my trade so I walked out. Now they are in the 1000+ range but interestingly I wandered into my local dealer on Saturday and low and behold there is a brand new 75 SS sitting under his gun rack I asked the price and he said 750 bucks. Fastest transaction the man has ever experienced I guarantee it. I didn't even have to look at the gun. Interestingly I bought it for 28 bucks less then what he was selling a new Browing SS Stalker.

oldelkhunter, my .300 Wby is stainless with a wood stock. The 7mm is blued with wood stock. I really like the look of the stainless/wood combination. Both rifles, which I have bedded, are legitimate 1/2 to 3/4" shooters with my reloads.

The Conetrols did lower the scope by at least 1/8". In fact, the Conetrols are mediums, whereas the Optilocks that this scope used to be in where lows. I like the Conetrols a lot, but they are a real PITA to mount a scope in. If the Optilocks were a little lower and had Torx ring screws I'd prefer them because of the polymer insert which eliminates scope alignment and ring mark problems. Eye relief is fine with both rifles, no complaints there.

OK the scopes your using are pretty much what I had in mind ... going to find out who has Optilocks around here and then call Conetrol. Yes they are a PITA when aligning a scope but I am pretty sure nothing else looks as nice and holds as well. I am almost afraid to ask him what his SS rings cost so I'll stick to matte blue on my stainless 75. Thanks for the input I really like scopes that sit low.

Yea, I like low scopes also. I might end up putting Conetrols on my other Sako as well. It's about 1/4" too high.

The Optilocks can be a real pain to find. D & R Sports has them I believe.

I was going to look at them at BAss pro shop who has them and then if I like them I would order them from DNR but now the Conetrols really have my interest also.
