Anyone own a .338/.378 Wby.?
#1
I was wondering if any of you own one of these rifles. I am thinking about purchasing an Accumark in this chambering. I have already owned a Lazermark in .300 Wby., but I let a good friend who fell in love with it talk me into selling it to him. Let me say that I love the larger calibers and I am interested in owning one rifle for any situation. I am primarily a bow hunter, but it looks like I'll be doing some rifle hunting in the future. I have spent my whole life around firearms and participating in the shooting sports. I am well aware that there are other calibers out there that can do what I want, but the .338/.378 really trips my trigger. Any personal experiences with this caliber and/or rifle would be appreciated.

Had one for a little while price of ammo made it easy for me to get rid of it...Reason I got rid of it was the gun is way too bulky with that HSor whatever stock and the 338 Rem Ultra mag....

I dont personaly own a 338-378 Wby but do have a 30-378 Wby Imp and the plain old 378 Wby.While both are more exspensive to feed than say a 300 RUM or 375 H&H, they are cheaper than my 416 Rigby fodder.
Both of them ROCK!.....on both ends......
I have most bases covered or I would have a 338/378.
I would try to find one to shoot first, the bigger boomers are not for everyone, that's why you see them for sale with a nearly full box of shells....doubleA

Been there--done that. It is alot of gun, as is the 30-378. My sense is the extra noise, cost and recoil don't justify the 150 fps over a 340 wby. The 340 has been more than enough gun on elk and deer to beyond 500 yds. Even though elk are big targets, I question the sensibility of shooting any farther under hunting conditions even though the gun is capable of it. Even a slight breeze plays havoc with any caliber at that range. Of course, there is a big difference between needs and wants--if you want one--give it a try and let us know what you think.

A friend of mine owns one, and it is a excellent rifle. He pushes a 275 gr. Swift A-Frame 3088 f/s 5822 ft/lb which is a devastating load on elk. Good luck with your new rifle.

My .378 weatherby is going to a new home this saturday. Every since I was a teenager I wanted one. Reading ballistics and thinking wow this gun is the meanest thing out there. It was in the top five at the time anyway. I think if you have the money to spend in ammo its the rifle for you. I don't really like the muzzle blast of the things in a hunting situation. But with todays brakes they are easy enough to handle recoil. I did enjoy blowing up rocks with mine I got a kick out of that. But that gets alittle expensive.

My uncle owns one and I will buy one when I graduate next year. The thing is an absolute thumper, so much power. However, before I take it hunting, I am gonna get some good bullets, lots of cases, and shoot the hell out of it, so as to get accurate with it. Be careful not to develop a flinch, VERY LOUD AND KICKS PRETTY HARD!

rdy2hnt,
Have you thought about a Remington 700 ARW from the custom shop?
6 3/4 lb. with a 26" tube. You will carry it more than you will shoot it!
338 ultra mag should be close to the Weatherby. If you are looking to stop big BEAR'S, look at the 375 ultra.
