I've shot SLUGS out of the same gun, but w/ 2 diff barrels.(28"-mod choke, 24"-cyl bore, ported)
I hunt with the 24" because it is more manuverable, and I get good groups.
But as for recoil,IMHO..
A 3" MAG, IS A 3"MAG, IS A 3" MAG

Porting does not reduce recoil,it only helps control muzzle jump.Velocity loss would be next to nothing as the shot column has already reached its velocity by the time the gases exit the barrel.
One other thing:Porting, like any barrel compensator,INCREASES muzzle blast to the shooter. To some people this is acceptable, others it is not.

From what I've seen with slug guns, porting adds alot of muzzle blast. Worse, hot lead often flies out of the ports and can be a danger to anyone on either side of you. If you are porting a shotgun for shooting slugs, I would highely recommend not doing it.

In my opinion, porting a shotgun definitly is not worth it. It might reduce muzzle jump but that is about it. It seems to me that porting is most effective for high pressure firearms, and a shotgun isn't high pressure enough for it to make a difference. A really good article on porting shotguns can be found at http://www.shotgunreport.com/TechTec...ChokePort.html
