RE: 30-06 VS 270
I like the 270 win its a favorite of mine. The 30-06 is more versatile because of bullet selection. The 270 and the 30-06 are built on the same case. So its a matter of personal choice and what your wanting to do with the caliber. If your going to shoot heavy bullets in the 270 win then you might as well shoot the 30-06. The 270 was built for more speed vs power. But at long ranges retained speed is energy. They say the 270 is not a long range deer rifle but if you look at the ballistics a fast 130gr bullet has as much energy as a 30-06 or 7mm mag. Look at a hornady light mag in a 270 vs. a standard 30-06 or 7mm mag box of ammo. Now if you shoot the hornady light mag in the 30-06 or 7mm mag of course is has more power, depending on the bullet selection. But the point is most people buy wal-mart ammo. The 270 in the hands of a experienced reloader is blowing those boys to the way side.

This should be interesting!
Like 'em both....depends on what you're hunting. Deer only...I'd opt for the .270 Win. If bigger game are in the picture....I'd probably choose the 30.06 for its versatitlity. Like it's been said on this board many times...there's nothing in North America that the "ol 30.06 can't handle aside our large bears.
Good luck with your decision.

I like my 270's about the best for Whitetails.I have other calibers but the 270 usually fits the ticket. They usually drop in their tracks .I use 150 grain .270 Win. Shot placement is the key success for any caliber being used.

I've used both for deer and did for years and In my opinion there isn't enough difference between the two to worry about it . I still own both calibers but don't use them anymore .

From 13 to 33 the only high powered rifle I owned was a Winchester 270, it has served me well. My old man has many rifles to choose from, 2or3 30-06s, and Weatherbys in 7mm and 300 weatherby mag, autos and bolts but, when we go a hunting he always grabs his Remington 700 in....well 270 Win.

I'd go for the 270 it is a fine choice, but I read your other post about "Magnums" and since you already have a 30 cal in 300RUM, you have all the power you'll need that the 270 may not deliver. Better to diversify your collection. The 270 is capable of more than just a deer only rifle, but with the RUM you have that is probably its purpose and it will fill that job description very nicely.[8D]

Tough call, I don't have a 270 but I know I wouldn't trade my 30-06 for anything, why? My girlfriend wants and is going to up grade her 30-30 to something bigger, I told her, "your getting a 30-06 in your choice unless you can prove to me why you want something just because you like the name in how it sounds. I'm not going to get into a hot heated debate as its a matter of personal preference, the way I look at it if it ain't broken, don't fix it, I'll keep my 30-06, I like the results, Bobby

The 270 is a fine caliber no doubt but i love the 30.06 and have killed more deer with it than any other caliber and would choose it over the 270 if that were my only two choices. I'd still use the 30.06 now if i were hunting anything bigger than deer. For deer sized game i love the 25.06 and that is now my number one deer rifle of choice!
