.30-06. You probably can't take moose or grizz with factory loads, and you won't find many .30-06 factories down to 55gr for prairie dogs, but reload some custom bullets for yourself, or have someone do it for you and you can shoot anything from prairie dogs to bruins or moose with it.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, as is evident by the posts. Given the choices you listed on your opening post.My opinion would be the 30-06. I had a 7mm Mag, i didn't like it at all. I have alot of experience with the 270 and it's my favorite caliber for deer sized game(maybe Elk too) but back to you question of versitility I say 30-06.

I'd choose the 7MM Rem. mag! Not too much gun for deer, and plenty of gun for most anything else!
If it's too big or too dangerous for the 7MM mag, then you'll need a .300 Ultra or bigger! And I'd say the only thing on this continent thats too big for the 7MM would be a big Brown bear.

If I were you I'd go with the 7mm Rem Mag.I have a 270,7 Rem Mag and a 300 Win Mag.When handloaded my 300 will do 3100 with a 180 and the 7 Rem Mag will do near 3000 with a 175.Can't see any animal realizing the difference but you'll notice the difference on your shoulder.According to ballistics tables the 7mm/175 will carry more energy and shoot flatter than the 300/180 combo past about 300 yards.I don't load a 180 in my 300 anymore as I have gone to a 200 grain Grand Slam exclusively.I also load the 7mm with a 140 at about 3300 for a flat shooting deer load.It kicks no more than my 270 but shoots a bit flatter.Load a good 160/165 in the 7mm Rem Mag and you are ready for anything short of big bears. And the recoil is not too bad but a 300 Win loaded to the max will really get your attention off the bench. One more thing...a lot of guys don't like the 7 Rem Mag just because it's so popular but it is a very good and versatile cartridge when loaded properly in a good rifle with a good man on the trigger.Might just be the best combination of versatility with tolerable recoil for the average shooter.

You can't go wrong with either the '06 or the 7mm mag for all North American game UP TO Grizzly Bears. My personal preference is the 7mm mag because it shoots flatter and hits hard. The 270 is a great choice for deer, but a little light for elk and moose.

I won't trading in my 300 win mag anytime soon! 150gr. hornady's for whitetail, 165 hornady's for black bear, 180 gr. speer grand slam for elk/moose, and if I ever get the chance, 200 gr. nosler partition's for big, big bear.
