Default RE: Versitile caliber

If I were you I'd go with the 7mm Rem Mag.I have a 270,7 Rem Mag and a 300 Win Mag.When handloaded my 300 will do 3100 with a 180 and the 7 Rem Mag will do near 3000 with a 175.Can't see any animal realizing the difference but you'll notice the difference on your shoulder.According to ballistics tables the 7mm/175 will carry more energy and shoot flatter than the 300/180 combo past about 300 yards.I don't load a 180 in my 300 anymore as I have gone to a 200 grain Grand Slam exclusively.I also load the 7mm with a 140 at about 3300 for a flat shooting deer load.It kicks no more than my 270 but shoots a bit flatter.Load a good 160/165 in the 7mm Rem Mag and you are ready for anything short of big bears. And the recoil is not too bad but a 300 Win loaded to the max will really get your attention off the bench. One more thing...a lot of guys don't like the 7 Rem Mag just because it's so popular but it is a very good and versatile cartridge when loaded properly in a good rifle with a good man on the trigger.Might just be the best combination of versatility with tolerable recoil for the average shooter.
