iowabuckslayer, i use 11.3 grains of imr 4227 hornady 45 grain v-max bullet, cci 400 primer, winchester brass it is a real accurate load in my rifle . ive chronographed it , id have to look it but i believe its just average velocity ( not hot ) as i am not an expert reloader , and i lean toward the safe side of the pressure scale . good luck

Hi bigcountry,
I have a Ruger 77/22 Hornet topped with a 1.5 X 6 Bauch & Lomb...and really like the little rifle. It is a great medium range varminter...and without peer in locations where the "loud report of a bigger gun" might cause problems. The .22 Hornet is "soft-spoken", very accurate, and clobbers varmints with authority....within its range. I've successfully used it on chucks to over 200 yards, (one approaching 300....but I won't do that again. It was a clean kill at the base of the neck but the little 45gr. Remington bullet did not expand at that range.) Though I have some Hornady V-Max loads at 3100 I want to give a try for chucks. It is also a very nice "turkey rifle" (with the 45gr. softpoints) where the big birds can be rifle hunted. I would absolutely recommend the Hornet....and have no intentions of getting rid of mine!
Good luck!

Thanks guys. Did any of you all read Guns and Ammo article on the 22 hornet for Jan I believe. It explains some of the weakness's of the 22hornet. It goes on saying its "inheriently inaccurate" due to too much taper, not much of a shoulder, and low case life.
Now, I am a see it believe it type guy. I strickly read mags for entertainment value. I am looking for a 22 round that I can reload, going about 2600fps for a 40 gr bullet. That doesn't wake up every neighbor in a 1 mile radius, with recoil like a 22LR. And the hornet seems to fit the bill. But I might look into the "K" hornet. Anybody have any ideas of this round. I like the 35 degree shoulder compared to the 5degree on the hornet.

Unless u just have your heart set on a 22hornet, i would consider looking into the .222 remington. Once apon a time it was the choice for benchrest shooters. It has slightly less range than a .223 rem but accuracy is suppose to be tops with it.

treedog, if I start thinking that way, then I will start looking at 223, then the way my crazy mind thinks, I will look at the 22-250 sitting beside it. Next think you know, I am at the gunsmith making it Ackley improved. Wait a minute, lost my head there.
Seriously though, I went to a gun store about 3 or so years ago, meaning perfectly well to come out with a 300win mag remington 700. I came out with a 300RUM. so I wasn't happy here and there, so I bought a heavy barreled police edition 700p. Still wasn't happy out to 500 yards, so had it rebarreled. This hobby thing is a disease.

The Hornet's "accuracy issues" are a matter of degree. It was never designed for.....or will be a "benchrest competition" cartridge. So what? What it was designed for.....and does very, very, very, well is....close to medium (a little over 200 yards) range varminter.....without waking every body up in the next two counties. It is more than accurate enough to take chucks, ground squirrels, turkeys, etc. to 200 yards or a little more. And with enough energy for javelina sized animals to a little less. And it does all of this with little recoil, little noise, little fuss.....and "little respect". And the .22 Hornet doesn't "care". It has worked...continues to work...and will work...when used for its intended purposes.
It's a fine little cartridge. Very capable.....and a h**l of a lot of fun!
