Default Rust on my Rem. mnt. rifle stainless ?

I bought my Remington mountain stainless rifle a couple of months ago and the other day I noticed a bunch of rust dots on the sides of the barrel close to the bolt. What' s up with that? Also I had a miss-fire happen yesterday in the stand when trying to shoot a pretty nice buck. I had to open the bolt and try and get it out with out spooking off the buck, long and behold before I could get it re-chambered and get set up again the buck was out of site, you could tell he was after a hot doe. He wasted no time out in the open. What' s up with that too, missfire? You could see where the firing pin hit the spot it put a little indintion not enogh to fire. I don' t think it was the bullet. <Federal Vital Shock>

What could have caused the rust and the missfire? I thought stainless didn' t rust

The S/S is made of different metals. S/S will rust.I have a friend who has a Ruger Security Six. It was his salt water boat gun. It was rusted and pitted some.I wouldn' t be alarmed over this. Take some 0000 steelwool or some Scotch Bright with some light oil and it will come right off. Go over it very lightly so you don' t change the guns original finish. As far as your misfire.I had the same thing happen last year with my Ruger M-77.I think what happened in my case the bolt wasn' t in the fully locked position. It' s possible it was bumped and I didn' t realize it until I went to fire.I ejected that round and chambered another. The next day I rechambered that misfired round and it fired instantly. If you would feel better take it to a competent Smith. My Ruger hasn' t missed a lick since that one and only misfire.I thought at first it was that round but it proved to be the rifle.

rusty,Is this the 1st time you have dropped the hammer this year? If I might rcmd. pull the bolt and remove the firing pin and clean the bolt and firing pin then use very little lube.I have seen this at the range with Rem.semi rifles, has a slight inprint on the primer. After cleaning the action for the club member she was fine.If the weather gets very cold dont use any lube inside the bolt or the firing pin will bind up and then " click" . Our season opens this Sat. and from what I saw 10 days ago the bucks are running the does big time.Good luck.

I took the bolt apart today and it was clean. I think the bolt may have been partialy opened when I fired, thats the only thing I can think of that could have happened like redhawk mentioned. It' s pretty easy to move the bolt from the locked position.
