Default WTB Marlin .45-70 22" barrel

Looking for a Marlin.45-70 with the .22" barrel and the pistol grip stock.

Age doesn't really matter. Looks don't really matter as long as it functions properly. This will be a hunting rifle that will be used.

What's available out there?

whats the average used 45/70 marlin, like the picture you posted above, going for near you?
at that time good used 45/70 marlins sold for only about $150 less than new blrs

I know I sold mine too cheaply when I upgraded to a browning BLR in 450 marlin
I prefer the strait grip BLR version
my marlin would consistently provide 2" 100 yard three shot groups, the blr does a bit better , at near 1.4" 3 shot bench rest groups,
but at about 140 fps faster with the same 405 grain bullet weight

I have a JM stamped Marlin 45-70 Guide gun with the ported barrel. I paid $350.00 for it from a guy that bought it new and only fired less than a half a box of ammo through it. I looks like new. The Marlin 45-70's were going for about $1000 to $1200 last I looked. I stole mine. The guy didn't want ot any more because he had crept up on the scope and got whacked on the eyebrow and he didn't want it any more. He was asking $450 which still would have been a deal but it is in my nature to dicker on asking price.

Lately I've seen them as high as $1500.

Thankfully I found a semi reasonable one.

More than I would have paid two years ago.

But low enough I could justify the purchase and don't feel terrible about it.

I won't lose money on the deal if I ever decide to sell it.

I'm not planning on it. This will be a regular Ohio rifle for me.

I've now used shotguns, smooth and rifled, .44mag and .45-70 marlins, .375 Winchester in Savage 99, muzzleloaders, ARs in .450 bushmaster and bolt actions in .350 legend.

I've spent a lot of money to decide the marlin .45-70 is my preferred "straight wall only" option.

This rifle will be set up exactly how I like it and will be my main Ohio tool moving forward. It'll get plenty of use elsewhere as well. Especially for PA Bear.

Good luck with the rifle. I never regretted buying mine. I have taken 7 or 8 hogs, maybe more I lost track, 5or 6 deer and a Bison with mine. Mine is the straight stock, I prefer them, all my shotguns are straight stock except my turkey gun. Mine likes to eat the Hornady Lever evolution 325 grain bullets.

My last .45-70 was the straight stock 18" model.

I knew from using other Marlins that I wanted the pistol grip and 22" barrel on this one.

Excited to get it in the woods this fall.

Hey Oldtimr I got one of the same but I bought mine NIB when I was down in FL around 1999. Really well made and handy rifle. I love mine so much I bought the 1895SBL to go along with it. IMO you can't have too many 45-70s. I had a Cowboy in it but sold it like a dummy. Got a good price for it but regret selling it.

I agree but my gun safe is over crowded no, more guns than it is supposed to hold.

you really can't go wrong with a marlin, marlin/ruger, chambered in 45/70 or browning BLR 450 marlin caliber rifle.
the vast majority of the big game I hunt has been in rolling hill, and aspen or conifer filled canyon country where shots over 150 yards are very rare!
I've used both cartridges and rifles on and off for several decades, I purchased my first marlin 45 /70 in the late 70s and my BROWNING BLR chambered in 450 marlin in 2000,
I've found the hard cast gas check 350-400 grain bullets, or jacketed bullets of similar weight, work very well in either rifle.
the BLR has consistently had marginally better accuracy, but nothing you hunt or you will ever know any difference , I just sight in to hit 3.5" high at 100 yards and go hunting, its proven to be devastating on ELK and hogs and a few deer.
mid range powders like IMR 3031, H4895 and WW 748, and imr 4064 have all proven to produce good accurate loads,
I might be in the minority but I prefer the BLR, over the marlin as its a tiny bit more accurate and to me just feels better in my hands.

btw
50 grains of IMR3031 under a 405 grain weight gas check bullet (linked)and a 215 fed primer in my 450 marlin chambered BLR has proven to be exceptionally consistent and accurate in my BLR
