Hello everybody. I' m looking into purchasing my first deer rifle. I' ve always used a shotgun, so I' m looking for some opinions. Has anyone used or know anyone that' s used the Remington model 710? Is it any good? Also, I' m debating on what caliber to use, what is your opinion- .270 or 30-06?
Thanks,
Darrell

Buy any AMERICAN MADE bolt action except a 710. Either .270 or .30-06 are great deer cartridges. If you were looking at the 710 because of the price tag, look instead to the savage 110 or remington 700 adl. Good luck.

I just picked up a new Ruger in 260 Rem. Nice little gun. I am going to find a compact light weight scope for it and that will be my carrry through the breaks rifle. I won' t have it ready for this year as its only a week until season. My 257 Roberts and 6.5x55 will carry the load this year.

The 270 is probably the best caliber. The 30-06 is over kill im my opinion. I have a 25-06, which I like a lot. Very accurate and flat shooting. Anything from 25 to 30 caliber would be a good gun. Unless you handload, I would get a popular caliber.

Assuming it is your first high power rifle, then 30-06. Together with a 12 gauge and a 22LR you' re set for almost anything in the lower 48. Specialize in rifles chambered for bigger and smaller cartridges AFTER you have acquired this very central mainstay. I have rifles from .223 to .416 including the .270 and the 30-06. If you were talking the shooting out on the prairies then MAYBE a 270; however, for Virginia with the possibility of hunting elk (West) or moose (North) as a future possiblity I' d recommend the 30-06.
I haven' t heard good things about the 710 though the word out there (except on TV) is that they are bad news -- some good advice about 700' s and Savages. Don' t rule out buying something good but used and put your savings towards a Leupold scope.

I have an old Savage 99 I love... 300 Savage with a rotary mag. Short of one of those I would probely get a Bolt gun in 30-06. Any of the major American brands are well made so just find one that fits you best. I have a Savage Bias BUT thats just Me. It' s you gun, and needs to fit you.

Darrell, do a search on past posts about the Remington 710 to get everybody' s input. There have been several in the past month. I' m a big fan of Remingtons but I don' t suggest buying the 710. A crappy trigger and cheap bolt housing are the main reasons why. Go with the Remington ADL. It' s only about $20 more than the 710, but you' ll need to buy a scope for it.

Folks posting on this forum typically disagree to some extent....however this is not the case with the Remington 710. Absolutely everyone is negative on that gun.
IMO both the .270 and the .30-06 are overkill for deer. However the .30-06 will also take you elk hunting!!!
For deer I like the .257 Roberts, the .25-06, the .260 Rem, and don' t forget the .243 Win...it' s been doing the job for a long time!!!
