What is on the menue to hunt,if elk are you need to consider enough gun.
That means starting at IMO.270 caliber or larger.
When men hear that you are looking for a gun for the " other" they go small frame, and caliber to match.
How much shooting dose she do,has she hunted before? These all need to be answered.
If this is a surprise, make sure it is one she wan' ts,it' s kinda of like buying blender for her birthday they tend to frown on that.
My wife likes to her .280 Rem in a Mountain Rifle, light fits her well and mild recoil.
Another good maker would be Winchesters Classic Compact in 7mm-08,or Browning A-Bolt Micro Hunter .260 or .308.
It all depends on what you wish to hunt.

Everything BareBack Jack mentions is perfect for a woman who wishes to hunt everything up to and including elk and moose.
I personally would lean toward the .260 Rem or the 7mm-08 Rem, but the .270 Win, .280 Rem or .308 Win will be fine, although they will kick a bit more. The little Browning A-bolt Micro Hunter in .260 Rem would be a perfect rig, I would think. And so would Briman' s Model 7 in .260 Rem or Winchester' s Model 70 Classic Compact in 6.5x55mm Swedish (if it comes that way) or 7mm-08..

The Ruger 77 Compact is a nice little rifle and can be had in 260 Rem and 7mm-08 Rem. Either cartridge is just about perfect for deer with mild recoil and excellent downrange performance. Savage makes a youth/ladies model that comes in 7mm-08.

It depends...If i was a woman i would want a pink firearm...heck i think it would be sweet if i had a pink one, or maybe black basecoat and then pink horizzon line...just my thoughts though. Seriously though, just for plinking ruger 10/22, small game various .410 or 20 gauges and it depends on the game for larger rifles.

One other thing is her size , small framed and petite or .....
My wifes is 5' 0 and youth models fit her well. If she was slightly taller then she' d have her choice of anything on the shelf.
If I remeber right Christine B. ( one of the boards moderators) shoots .30-06
As far as recoil goes a semi-auto has a little less felt recoil than a bolt and then you have the muzzel brakes that could help too but they make it a lot louder.

If you pick up Guns and Ammo magazine, this month Col. Boddington took his daughter hunting for her first time and did a write up on it. He ordered her a Kimber rifle in 7mm-08, but since it would not be here for awhile they opted for a .260. I would go with either one of these, if big game is going to be the quarry. If not, look at varmint calibers like the .223. And take her out to shoot milk jugs full of water, I have showed two girls how to shoot by busting those and they just like to watch the things explode. And be prepared to be outshot after awhile, something about a woman' s attention to detail and patience make' s them natural sniper types

thanks for all your input ,, she is 5' 8' but of small farme,, i have 2 A bolts ,, 1 in 300wsm, and 1 in 270wsm,, i was going to let her shoot the 270wsm but the gun seemed to long in the stock 4 her and the comb was too low so we are looking at youth guns in 260 ,7-08, and 243win but im not a big fan of the 243 ......
