20 Gauge Slugs
My 10 year old son has completed his hunter safety course and passed with flying colors. He has also received his deer tags for the upcoming Illinois gun season. I purchased a nice, used 870 in 20 gauge for him. I have it outfitted with a factory, rifled slug barrel, Speed Feed synthetic stock in youth size and a 2.5 power scope sitting on a BSquare scope mount. I know we will need to try several different slugs, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. Gun is chambered for 2 3/4 only. Local guy here recommended the Lightfield Sabots. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just started using the lightfields in 12 ga and I do like the trajectory, weight and distance you get out of them. I was given a pack by sportshop because they were convinced I would be back to buy more if only I tried them and I did. buymore that is. The only way to really tell is to get a couple different brands and see what shoots well in that particular gun. PS. I also shoot 2 3/4 out of my 12.

My old Mossberg did not like the Remington Sabot' s. Shot Win' s and Fed' s really well. Only real way to find out is to get a bunch and load up!!!!!! P.S. Take a recoil pad if your doing alot of shooting at once. Those things will make a flincher out of him!!!!!! Short practice sessions are the rule.

RE: 20 Gauge Slugs
My 12ga 870 with rifled barrel really likes the 3" Winchester sabots in either standard velocity or high velocity (only 100-150 fps extra in the HV' s stated on the box). There' s been a lot of new slugs out since I did my initial slug trials about 4 years ago in my gun, but back then it didn' t shoot any of the Remington, Federal or others I tried worth beans. The Winchester' s group inside a paper plate with open sights at 100 yards. Longest possible shot where I hunt is 75 yards, so I' m happy.
