I once saw a featherweight M-70 in .270 shoot a three shot group under 1/2" . That was exceptional.

I used to own a shooting range with a machine shop and a reloading bench 100 feet away. Lots of folks came there to sight in their rifles and often stayed the weekend while barrel floating and glass bedding happened.

One guy came there claiming his 7 Mag could hit a nickel at 300 yards. When I got him to the 100 yard bench he proceeded to shoot a group over 3.25" There' s a lot of BS in accuracy and it eventually becomes what' s important to me.

Normally I expect a rifle to show groups under 2" at 100 yards using hunting grade bullets. Most rifles with a little tweaking will do that.

My standard of accuracy is for 1 1/2" at 100 yards using a hunting grade bullet. There' s a lot to be said of the confidence afield knowing that if I do my job, my gun will do it' s job.

Vapodog.has told the secret !!!! " Hunting grade bullets " . These are what decides the groups. I' ve tried them all, some are very good, but mostly all you can get are 1 1/2 to 3 inch groups, with them . This by hand loading these and alot of playing around ! Factory loaded ammo ? Who knows where they will fly !!!!!!

If a gun has been floated, bedded, trigger work, etc., then I don' t believe a person should be satisfied unless that particular gun shoots MOA or less at 100 yds., especially when the shots at game have the chance of being long ones
I agree. Worst rifle I ever had was a Remington 700 BDLSSDM in 30.06. I took that rifle to the range and went thru the entire break in procedure. Next day I went back out with 5 different brands and weights of ammo. Gun wouldn' t shoot. Best group I got was 3 1/2" . I took it to a gunsmith and had them recrown the muzzle (it was a little out of round from the factory), polished the locking lugs, free floated the barrel, and adjusted the trigger to a light but crisp 2.5 lb. Got it back the following week and took it to the range again. This time, with 5 different brands of ammo and bullet weights, best group was 1 1/2" . I wasn' t happy. I' d spent a bunch of cash on that rifle, and another 300.00 bucks to get it to shoot, and it wasn' t doing it. I had a Browning .270 that out of the box would shoot 3/4" groups all day with the old Remington corelokt ammo. The Remington got pawned off on some unsuspecting dealer at the next gun show that came to town!!
