My uncle has a Browning A-bolt slug gun for Iowa, shoots like a charm.

When we drew tags in Iowa last year, we didn' t really have a slug gun. We went down, and bought a pair of REMINGTON 870 EXPRESS' S. Synthetic stocks, 26" VR' s and 20" fully rifled, cantilevered slug barrels. For glass, we have Leupold 1-4X shotgun scopes, leupold rings and such. Putting on the nice scopes makes a dif. I ended up shooting a 140 class 9 point with that gun, it performed fine in the cold weather. Stood up to everything i threw at it, cold weather, mud, rain, and yes, even extreme heat(i take it with when i go scouting in the summer, very humid). I got my best groups from the Remington Coppersolid sabots, those things really put the smack down on deer.

I would recommend a Remington 870. Wal mart guns are cheaply made. Big Green(remington) is pretty much all we buy. The remington 11-87 is good too, my uncle used it, worked like a charm.

BTW, we took 5 dandy bucks in iowa, ranging from 130-140 class, and 3 does during First season...3 of 5 bucks fell to Remington 870' s with fully rifled slug barrels in 12 gauge, two from my uncle' s browning, 2 does from an 870, and one too an 1100.

i have the 695 also, shoots great, looks like crap. i consider it my sitting gun, too heavy and awkward to carry with a scope mounted on it. also found that the safety was a pain in the rear. i quit using it a few years ago and went with a 20 guage browning pump, seems to kill them just as dead as anything else i shoot. by the way, they had a recall on the 695 a few years back, something to do with safety i think.

Deputy, Thanks for the info as that is the way I was leaning anyway. I guess I will just have to get me a H&R 12 guage. I guess I just needed some reassurance.

Brian they are all capable of killing and shooting well! but in the test we have done for cost and simple good solid working gun the H&R was the hands down winner! it really shines past the normal ranges like 150 yds ! bes tthing you can do is get it zero it at 50yds about 2.5-2.75 inches high then re shoot it at 100yds! you should be on the money no trouble sligs must be zeroed at supersonic speeds! unlike rifles which are zeroed at 100yd shotguns must be zeroed at 50 ! and oh boy talk about wind! a 5-10 mile an hour wind can blow you off a target by 9 inches at that speed! it takes a lot of ammo down range to judge that ! but hey thats why we practice! let me know if i can be of help !
