It is a stripped version of a Model 700...have not seen a whole lot of them but it has the same fundamental action as a 700...cheaper wood...i believe no engine turned bolt and not as nice of a bluing job.

I have a Remington Model 74 (Autoloader) Sportsman chambered in .30-06. Bought it new in 1985 for about $300-$400(?). It as the same as the model 7400 and 740, only it does not have any checkering on the stock or forearm. The blueing on the gun is also more matted (Cheaper?). The rifle has preformed perfectly for me...I just make darn sure it is thoroughly cleaned after each shooting session. Would assume the same is the case for the 78 Sportsman.
