I believe on medium sized caliber can do it all with different loads. Unless were discussing claiming meat on small game of squirrel size so mine is.
Small
.270 win with 110 vmax
Medium
.270 win with 110 Accubond
Large
.270 win with 140 Accubond
Dangerous
Id love to try and take dangerous game with a .270 and 150 partition but if a minimum caliber as in Africa is imposed then .375 H&H

4 for the world...
.243 Win.
.30-06
.340 Wby
.416 Rigby
Here are my 4, the backups are one of the others...ie for deer 30-06 could use the .243 as a backup, elk using the .340 could use the 06 as the back up..

270 with 150gr partitions?
I think you'd find out why they call the cape buff "black death" haha
thick skin/dangerous game I'd want more gun.
for almost everything else a 270 would probably do the job, i read about some african hunter who's goto lion gun was a 270 course lion is consider thin skin I believe.

I remember reading a 5 gun battery for the world...the author chose...
.243 Win
.280 Rem.
.30-06
.375 H&H
.458 Lott
Each could be used to back up another on a given hunt, all are fairly readily available worldwide...
I think I might choose a 270/30-06 in place of the 280 and then a .300mag in place of the 06 for my 5 gun battery...

7mm 175gr FMJ sounds more ideal...than 150gr 270 partitions...
check out these section densities...

I think I'd either want a very trusting and PH backing me up closely...or a gun barer nearby with something big...
I hear ya about always wanting to take something with a certain caliber, for me I really want to take a buff with a .458-500gr bullet.
I know they make 160gr bullets for the 270, maybe a 160gr solid? Of course I guess it would depend on what the dangerous game was...cape buff/elephant, vs. lion/leopard, etc...?
what do you think about a 7x57 for elephants? Read this...

O.K.,but w/one exception.
s-.22lr-It works and it's cheap.Why change?
m-.270-great range,larger bullets.
l-.300 WM-The seven is great but too close in diameter to the .270.The .300WM has a solid reputation on big game.
d-.416 RM-got to be able to stop a charge.
