Lol, A stalemate we have reached DBH. Thats exactly the answer I expected. I suppose because the 7mm really does have much better bullets available due to its long range cousin the 7RM. I love my .270 for what it is and appreciate the 7mm-o8 for what its not.

No doubt in my mind brother. I like the .270 win because my pappy liked it and so did his. I already had them laying around. If a .22 mag was all I had access to Id still find a way to take game. As long as it weighs less than 8 pounds, has at least a 4 power scope and can hold 1.5 to 2 moa without tearing my shoulder off, ol Podunk will put meat on the table.

Actually...Why do we have a .270??? Seems I remember Winchester was also playing with a .284 or 7mm-06 at the same time...
If my memory is correct, it came out about 1925 and were it not for Jack O'Connor's praises it might not have made it...
The reason we don't have a .25-08 is so we can argue about a .243...

O' Connor didnt start repping the .270 win for years after it came out and even then he nevber did to the extent people believed him too. He liked the 7x57 and 30-06 just as much but commonly stated that the ".270 with 130 grain bullets is all that is needed for most big game". The .257 bob is a shortened 7x57 by the way. And a 25-08 wasnt made popular for the same reason as a 27-08. There was already a suitable long action based on a better parent case in that caliber.

Agreed, sorry bout the 257 bob/ 7x57/260 thing. I looked it up right after I posted. I would also like to mention the fact that the .270 is flatter shooting than any comparable short action chambering.

It has been proven through physics that the aero dynamics of a .284 bullet giving the same powder charge as any other cartridge will travel further and retain more speed than any other caliber out there. Thats what is considered the Middle of the road. Plus the bullet weight ranges makes it a better choice than a .277. Thats why they never made a 270-08. Just a better bullet selection.
But saying that I'm a 270 advocate. I believe they are a close second to aero dynamics to the .284 class and the .308 class. I would love to build a 270 STW or a 270 win mag. That would be a mighty fine 600yd plus antelope rifle. But I could just buy a 7 STW and call it a day. You can have RCBS build you dies and a reamer and make your own.

I've never understood why Winchester decided the world needed a .270 in the first place with only .007 difference from the 7mm.But all the big companies do strange things.Win's .284 was a fantastic cartridge well ahead of it's time. They decidd to intro it along with a couple new guns one of which was the 88.The mag was short so they had to seat the bullet deeply substantially reducing the amount of powder in the case.Rem introed their .280 along with a semi and pump. Here again they underloaded the case so it would function well in the semi.Dumb and dumber!
