Is the recoil from a 7MM-08 noticeably different from that of a .270 (130 gr Core Lokt)? I' m looking for something that I can plink with all afternoon and not feel like someone nailed me in the shoulder with a sledge hammer
. Based upon posts I' ve read here, the 6.5MM or 260 would also be candidates.

Yes the 7mm-08 Rem is usually a little lighter in recoil than the 270 Win in guns of equal weight. You are burning more powder out of the 270. I can shoot my 7mm-08 off the bench with no problems with recoil. If you use 120 grain bullets recoil is hardly noticeable. Besides being a sweet shooter, the 7mm-08 Rem is all business downrange.

Everything frizzellr said has been my experience also. The 260 is another low recoil and very effective cartridge but less guns and factory ammo available for it,if you reload it would also be a good choice.I think the 7mm-08 is probably one of the all time best deer cartridges ever created and will continue to gain more and more popularity as time goes by,its a winner.
