Default 30-06 Springfield report

I have to do an "event of the century" report for my Geography/World Affairs high school class. I already approved the 30-06 with my teacher. I want to tell of how it originated and the signigance it had when it was a military cartridge. Does anybody know of websites that have information on this cartridge? Any help would be great.

P.S. please don't go into detail on the subject here, because I need to be able to cite where I got the information from, and it has to be a tracable source, ie. website, encyclopedia, etc.

Thanks again!

That should at least get you started in such a classic timeless catridge, it almost ranks up there with the more powerful 7.62x54R which preceded 30-06 by 15 years.

762mm,
The 7.62x54R is NOT more powerful than the 30-06. It is balisically similar to the 308 winchester.

The chronograph tells a different story and gives the real deal. 7.62x54R's 147gr bullet flies across the sensors at 2825fps average for 1980's production Russian surplus. The 30-06 was loaded by the US gov at 2700fps. The crazy Turks back in the 1940's and 1950's loaded their 8mm Mauser 154gr bullets to over 3000fps as recorded by my chrono and pronounced recoil.

These are just a few calibers I play with and chrono the velocities from time to time as I get in different lot shipments. But it's true, 30-06 is right there between .308 Win. and 7.62x54R in power using the military surplus 150gr loads.

Reloading the 30-06 brings out it's true potential.
