A 1/4 bore (.25 cal) would be my preference for a double duty varmit/deer choice. If your not reloading the 25-06rem would be the chambering to look into in .25 cals.

so the 270 or the 7mm-08 wouldn't be to heavy for Coyote? i have been reading up on the 7mm-08, me like alot . Boy, you guys made it tough on me now. i like them both. i might have to do the "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" on these two fine calibers or unless i win the lotto tonight. If i do i will buy you fellas who replied to this post a new rifle for christmas thanks 4 everyone's comments i will let you know what i end up with.

I have a 243, 7mm-08, and 6mm and while I love them all.. The 243 is my favorite for deer and smaller game.. Just too many good bullet choices out there. If you handload then the 7mm-08 and 6mm is a better deer round than 243, but if your buying factory loads you'll do better with the 243...

My favorite is the 270-winchester. I have killed many deer with my old 270-winchester, I never feel over or under gunned packing the 270-winchester. Ammo is also cheap & easy to find.

I have or have had most of the Deer calibers, from a 222. to a 300WM. and to tell you the truth I love em all, but my new found go to gun is my Rem 700 7mm-08, flat out to 300yrds with a 140gr corelok. and with a smaller gr good on the yotes too.

For sure if you want one gun to hunt deer and yotes, one of the smaller calibers, like a .243 is a great gun. Bullet choices for each animal are extensive. Lots of other calibers are very good too, and none has much on other calibers despite some comments. Some of your choice depends on how you will be hunting. I used to hunt with a camp, and we spent most of our time driving deer, in public land. For that type of hunting, I always wanted more of a "hammer" than I needed for stand hunting at less alarmed deer, in less crowded conditions. For the drive hunting, I like my 30/06 or a .308. but they would be overkill for yotes.

I carried a 270 for years then I tried 7mm-08 this year. Now I was hardecore 270 man then the new pet shined through and you can down load for yotes and up to elk, moose and bears in the lower 48. Just some food for thought, give it a try. I took a buck at 175 yards, no run and no tracking. Truly impressed with the round!

For whitetail it's hard to beat the good ole' .308 winchester. Plenty of velocity and energy out to ranges that the majority of hunters will never shoot at and it's mild on the should. Plus, it's a very popular cartridge giving you multitudes of choices when it comes to rifles and ammo. It's offspring, the 7mm-08 is also a good choice for deer. Both, in my opinion, are over kill for coyotes.

all cals are perty good, depending on you....did ya go into the stores and try and buy ammo when it was short?...all i saw were 30-06 and 223's on the shelves...and some stuff it looked like nobody used...hard to find my stuff... all im sayin is get somethin really popular so you dont get charged an arm and a leg fer it if that happens again, and more than likeely it'll be at the corner stores in da country
