Default 30-06 Identification

I bought this gun over fifteen years ago - I am wondering if someone could help identify the make? I cannot find a manufactures name on it - the serial number is partially covered by the scope mounts. I would rather not take the scope of it is not necessary.

I have a few more pictures of the bolt and action if that would help as well.

Thanks for your help.
Jeff

It has aSpringfield1903 or 1903A3 action. The bottom metal is Springfield Model 1903. The safety has been changed to a low profile model and a nice bolt handle was added.

Nice gun.

Thank you.
I am probably going to try and sell the gun/combo - now I have to try and figure out a reasonable value for it.

Thanks again for your help Falcon.

I'd think hard before I sold a rifle like that. It's a beautiful piece, and the values of military spec 1903 and 03-A3 rifles have gone through the roof of late, and I'm not sure how that effects the value of a sporterized rifle, but if it were mine, I'd hand onto it. I'm betting it's one heck of a shooter.

Definitely a Springfield. Nice custom gun!

I also would hesitate to sell unless you can get decent money for it. In the last 30 years, the climate of value has changed so much to elevate the value of military guns, so making a custom like that is rarely done anymore. I had a nice Springfield in the early '70s with a fiddleback maple stock. That gun shot very well. I like the cool bolt handle on yours. I used to work at a gun shop and do some stock work and light gunsmithing back in the day. Now, I am really out of the loop on gun values.

That's a sporterized model 1903 (not an 1903-A3) It's either a Springfield or a Rock Island Arsenal. It looks like it was done very nice. I have 4 sporterized 03's and 03A3's and all of them shoot great. In original USGI issue they will bring anything from $500.00 to $1,000.00 for your standard run of the mill rifle. More (sometimes much more) if it's all original (no re-arsenal) or a special issue like a National Match rifle.

As far as value goes, that depends on condition, muzzle and throat erosion etc... But assuming all of that checks out ok your looking at about $250.00- $450.00 unfortunately. I've put well over $3,000.00 of work into this rifle (not counting the base rifle) and I bet I wouldn't get over $1,000.00 for it on the market today. That's ok because that's not why I did it. I did it because I like to have something that is not like everyone elses....something different.

Good luck with the sale if you choose to sell it but you may want to re-think it. As these rifles become less and less available so do the sporterized versions as well.

I believe you'll find the name of the place where manufactured to be on the front receiver ring under the scope mount base......
