If you get a pass through using a 125 gr in a 30-06 for deer, it must be a close shot or the deer are not that big in the body.
By the way,it's more likely that you will get a pass through with a longer shot than a shorter range shot, because the bullet is traveling slower at longer ranges, and will expand less as a result.

I have shot lots of deer using 125gr out of the '06, and all of them were pass thru's.
What's the difference between shooting 125gr's out of a 30-06, and 100gr's out of a .243
The 125 gr .30-06 has about 50% more energy than the 100 gr .243.
As SJ said, bullet constuction makes all the difference. I don't own a .30-06 but have shot many deer and antelope with a .300 Savageusing the old 110 gr XFB and all have been complete pass-throughs.

For deer, I would not go less than 150 gr nor more than 165 gr in the 30-06.

If it shoots ok in your gun and you have practiced with it to a point that you are comfortable with it then by all means, use the bullet. A lot of people are working up reduced loads with lighter bullets in medium sized calibers to beat heavy recoil rather than using smaller calibers. Keep your shot to a reasonable distance and the deer shouldn't know what hit it with a well placed shot.

I took an Axis Deer at about 120 yards with the factory Remington 125 grain bullets and it dropped right on the spot. After I got to the deer to clean it, I noticed that the bullet exploded on the shoulder and that the lead seperrated from the copper jacket. Lucky the damage was enough to drop the deer in its tracks because the blood trail would have been very light. There was no exit hole and the entry hole was very small. I still Shoot these bullets, but not for Axis Deer, I use them on Feral Goats and they are absolutely deadly on even the Trophy Billys I encounter every now and then.
