If you can't afford a Kimber, then a Taurus is not a bad choice. The slide is suppose to be forged and not cast (forged is better). These guns do not have the greatest finish, but they function and shoot okay. One thing I don't like, if it is going to be a defensive gun, is the internal security safety system. It is possible for these to break. They have broken ononeTaurus 24/7 and more than one Smith & Wesson M&P at my club. If you have not been trained on a SA 1911, please take a course or work with someone who knows the gun well and shoots it often (and well).

I have a Taurus PT1911 sitting right here on my desk and it DON'T have internal security system. The security system is actually in the top of the hammer. You can choose to forget it even exists, as I do, or change the hammer if it bugs you that much-but it won't render the gun inoperable if broken on this particular model-just the security system won't be operable. I've ran a LOT of rounds through mine and it has not had 1 single malfunction. If you need a good 1911 out of box, go for it. The only thing turning me off is the fact that the sight dovetail cuts in frame are of non-standard size, with nobody making adjustable rear sites for them.

Like I posted in the other post about a Taurus I will do the same here.
They do not have a good product, lack QC and there service sucks. I'm not going to bother to type up my interaction but you can search for it if it interests you enough.
I can't say enough bad things about them. Gave mine away because I couldn't in good conscience sell it to anyone.

the one taurus that i have looked at and handled, appeared to be a decent gun. but upon closer examination, we noticed that whenever we dropped the slide or released it, the hammer followed it. its not supposed to do that and it was factory new, apparently someone missed checking that one out.

Well I sure can't complain about my Taurus 1911. Like Stalkingbear, I have several hundred rounds through mine and I haven't had so much as a stove pipe or any other malfunction. Off a rest, at 25 yds, a full magazine will leave one huge ragged hole in the target. My only disappointment is the finish is not as bright or polished as I would like. But I can live with that.

i have one and love it to death. the finish sucks, thats for sure but i have put almost 2k through it, mostly reloads and she runs like a striped a**ed ape. the factory mags suck. replace them and dont leave them loaded. they make good range mags though. if you leave them loaded they will split at the top and shoot all your ammo out the top.
