Default Just what we need another new 30 caliber.

Has anyone seen the new Remington catalog they have a new 30 cal that is suppose to match the ballistics of the 308 for there R15.

From the catalog.
Now for the first time, RemingtonR brings you 30 caliber hunting performance
in a lightweight R-15 modular repeating rifle. Our new 30 Remington® AR
cartridge produces big-game-dropping ballistics similar to the venerable
308 Win. with pressures perfectly suited to our lightweight R-15 platform.
Comparable terminal power was once only available in the heavier AR-10
platform. This cartridge is the ultimate synergy of our ammunition and
firearms expertise, as its development forever changes the shape of both
categories, creating a revolutionary new big-game hunting system. Our
lightweight R-15 platform – its minimal recoil, rapid follow-ups, easy
maintenance and inherent accuracy – chambered for a cartridge that will
put down deer-sized game with gusto. This year’s offerings include the most
trusted big-game bullet of all time, Core-Lokt, the pinnacle of polymer-tipped
accuracy, AccuTip and an economical UMC loading. As a cartridge, the 30
Remington AR breaks new ground. In conjunction with our R-15 modular
repeating rifle, it marks the beginning of a
new era in the deer woods of
North America.

It seems like if you can nearly match the ballistics of a .308 why not just use a .308. I mean i guess it is a lighter more compact platform but I'm sure the difference is pretty much negligible.

Gotta sell more guns, I guess. Take the proven success of the AR, and combine it with America's favorite caliber. Sounds like a marketing guy's dream.
Not mine, though.

I think the point here was 308 Win performance without the extra weight of the AR-10

Never really understood why people fuss over companies creating these rounds that basically, mimick current "standard" rounds. It is of no loss to me financially so I could care less. Maybe someone will sell their prized .308 and I can get a good deal on it used!!

I've never understood thenew caliber craze like the remington ultras, Winchester Short Mags, Marlin's new leverevolution calibers like the .308 Marlin, Thompsons .30 TC, the list goes on and on.... I'd rather see companies put more resources in the quality of their products and good customer service, then blow it on marketing gimmicks. I think Remington (and others) would be better suited to apply the old 80/20 principle, and make better quality, tried and true guns like the 700,1100, 11-87and 870 in the most popular calibers. How manyRemington guns over the last few years are already gone -- the 798, 799, Cheap Spartanguns, andI think we'll add the new"887 Wanna-be Benelli Nova" Pump gun to the list within a yearor two. The Ultra magsare incredibly inefficientrounds that do nothing but beat youup andburn up barrels. I'll stay with the .270, '06, .30-30, and.243 standard calibers all day. Just my opinion -- maybe I'm just a Jack O'Connor type of person....

I thought the 6.8 Rem SPC was supposed to be the cat's meow on the AR-15 platform as as a step up in terminal ballistics. Where is it now? I dont know anything about the .30ARbut I wonder if it's based on the old .30 Remington/6.8 spccase which I am sure they are still tooled up for?
