Head0001...thats interesting. I guess I ought to look at the ballistics tables. I had always heard the 270 or 7MM was a flatter shooting calibre than 30-06. BTW....I am currently shooting 165 gr out of my 30-06. My longest shot on deer to date has been right at 200 yards and have never shot it on range further than 100 yds. I have it zero at 3 in high at 100 yds. At that zero...where would I be at on 300 yds?
Your trajectory depends on a couple of different things. Such as velocity and height of scope above the bore. However if you are 3 inches high at 100 then you are pretty close to dead on at 300 yards. Definitely within 5 inches.

A lot of shooters tout the 270, but personally I prefer the heavier bullet of the 30-06. And I personally do not think there is a dimes bit of difference in a hunting situation(trajectory wise). May be an inch or two on paper. But definitely none in a hunting situation.

I can sight my 30-06 in 3 to 3-1/2inches high at 100 yards. And a high shoulder shot(top of the shoulder)keeps me dead in the boiler room out to 400 yards with no problem. And that is exactly what the 270 will do. But the 30-06 does it with a heavier and larger diameter bullet. Pretty much a no brainer to me. Tom.

BTW...I am shooting Federal Vital Shok Sierra GameKings
Per the Federal website, the 30-06 165 Sierra GK will be just over 8 inches low (8.2) at 300 yards with a 200 yard zero. A 200 yard zero is almost 2 inches high (1.9) at 100 yards. You need to try it with your gun to see how YOUR gun shoots. Be aware of the wind drift on the windage.

Having shot game with all 3 mentioned ('06, 270 and 7-08) and the fact that there is not much difference between them trajectory wise, you do not really need to change from your '06.
But, if I were to pick between the 270 and 7-08, for as much as I like the 7-08, I like the 270 better. I'll admit I have limited experience with the 7-08 only taking a few animals with it. And it was very effective. But I have killed a lot of game with the 270 from distances literally point blank to way out there and it has never let me down.

6 one way half dozen the other on the calibers above...I dont see why you cant shoot 300 yrds with an 06.

30-06 will allow you to hurl a bullet 300 yrds as well and a heavier bullet to boot.

270 is a 130gr rifle...there is virtually no other load to consider for deer.

7mm08 gets you in the 140gr class and is a great caliber for whitetail...

I do prefer my 270 though for deer hunting sight in 2in high and your holding dead on out to 250yrds.. Havent really shot out past 200 with it...Never had to....and i think you will find once you do a little scouting andsee where deer are coming into these fields you should be able to set up in a position where you arent required to make a 300yrd shot...

The gun can only do so much on a longer range shot...the rest is up to you...just buying a 270 or a 7mm08 doesnt mean you can take that 300yrd shot and its lights out...

Just compared the three on federalammo.com and with Nosler Partionbullets 140gr 7mm-08,130gr .270, 165gr .30-.06

Zeroed at 200 yards the 7-08 is -8inch @300yards, .270 is -6.5@300yards, .30-.06 is -7.9inch@300 yards.Wind drift 10mph cross wind was relative between the three also.So yes you are really splitting hairs, but it's always fun to have different rounds/barrels !!
