Head0001...thats interesting. I guess I ought to look at the ballistics tables. I had always heard the 270 or 7MM was a flatter shooting calibre than 30-06. BTW....I am currently shooting 165 gr out of my 30-06. My longest shot on deer to date has been right at 200 yards and have never shot it on range further than 100 yds. I have it zero at 3 in high at 100 yds. At that zero...where would I be at on 300 yds?
Your trajectory depends on a couple of different things. Such as velocity and height of scope above the bore. However if you are 3 inches high at 100 then you are pretty close to dead on at 300 yards. Definitely within 5 inches.
A lot of shooters tout the 270, but personally I prefer the heavier bullet of the 30-06. And I personally do not think there is a dimes bit of difference in a hunting situation(trajectory wise). May be an inch or two on paper. But definitely none in a hunting situation.
I can sight my 30-06 in 3 to 3-1/2inches high at 100 yards. And a high shoulder shot(top of the shoulder)keeps me dead in the boiler room out to 400 yards with no problem. And that is exactly what the 270 will do. But the 30-06 does it with a heavier and larger diameter bullet. Pretty much a no brainer to me. Tom.
