Default Remington 7400 in 30-06 SPRG.

I have a remington 7400 chambered in 30-06 SPRG. I have owned this gun for many years but haven't shot it much because I couldn't achive the accuracyI desired (1.5" at 100 yards ) I have shot 125, 150,165 and 180 grain bullets from numerous manufacturers. The best groupI got was about 3" at 100 yards with Winchester 180 grain powerpoint ammo. I am on my second scope, have checked the bases and rings numerous times and have even added a QUE industries muzzle break that acts like the Browning BOSS system. I still can't get the gun to group any better than the 3" I had. What have I missed? Is there anything else I could try?

The reasonI am trying to get it to shoot better is so I can give it to my Father to use to hunt deer. He is shooting a 7mm rem. Mag. and the recoil is getting to be a bit much for him. Thank you in advance for your advice.

3" at 100 yards is plenty accurate for deer. I had a 7400 in 243 and the best it would do was 2" groups and i now have one in 270 and it gets 2.5"-3" groups. They are not known to be very accurate guns. If you want great groups get a bolt gun.

How's the trigger? You might try a trigger job. Remington's are know for having bad triggers from the factory. A good smith can work miricales with a remington factory trigger. It will be well worth the 50 bucks. You might also try floating the barrel. Good luck!

2MOA is about the best you can get with a 7400 with factory loads. I get 1.5MOA out of mine and worked long and hard finding a load that worked.

There have been a few '06 7400's in my family, most of 'em were 2 inch guns, pretty fair for an autoloader and plenty good for deer hunting. I've got one in a carbine, actually shoots just a tad over an inch with Winchester factory 180 roundnoses and a bit better with handloads. Figure it's the heavier barrel, they just cut the standard barrel down and cut the crown.

Thanks for the input guys, I guess thats as good as it gets for this gun. My Father already has some bolt actions that are very accurate but he has a hard time getting a second shot in most of the time if it is needed. I just thought that a semi-auto would help him out with that. Most of the shots will be within 200 yards so I guess i'll try to convince him to try it out.

Thanks again,
