Ballistics question/help
#1
I finally found time to get out and shoot my early christmas gift from my girlfriend, which isaWinchester Model 70 in a .270 caliber. The weather hasnt been great here and Ive been working, but managed to get out today. I parked the truck at what ended up to be 66 yards away, so thats what I sighted in for. I didnt have much time, but I did manage to get it dialed in. My question is, if Im shooting Winchester Super-X Powerpoint in 130 grain, what can I expect at 100, 150, 200 yards? If theres a buck at 100 yards and im sighted in for 66, should I still put the crosshairs right on the money?I would go back and find out, but Ill be working all week during daylight hours. Thanks for any help you have.

Sighted in dead-on at 66 yards with that round you'll bearound -0.5 inch low at 100 yrds, around -2.2 inches low at 150 yrds, and around -5.25 inches low at 200 yrds.
But if you go back to the same range and dial it in to be around +1.75 inches high at your 66 yard spot, then you'll be +2.14 inches high at 100 yrds, +1.74 inches high at 150 yards, dead-on 0.0at 200 yrds, and -3.28 inches lowat 250 yrds ....
I used the data from the Winchester site http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/comparerifle.aspx?symbol=X2705&atype=1&cty pe=1&action=1
to plug into this other ballistics calculator http://www.handloads.com/calc/
It's probably not right on, but gives you a ballpark to work from.

8mm/06 has the right approach. I didn't check his numbers but that is how you want to do it. The kill zone on a deer is about the size of a basketball. Using this method, you will be able to take one out past 200 yards easy.
