Default 30.06 Ballistics Question

I was wondering if anyone knew a website that could help me out with my 30.06 (or if anyone here can supply me with info instead of a website). I'm going to be shooting 150 gr. shells out of it and didn't know what to expect for ballistics. I've sighted it in for 100 yards and it's right on. It's about an inch or two low at 40-50 yards as well. I would like to use it to its full potential just in case I had to make a longer shot than 100 yards. Any help would be appreciated.

Most of the major ammunition companies will have ballistic info on their web sites. I just went to Remington and Federal and they both have tables that you can use. Good luck and have fun.

First of all, how high is your scope center line, as compared to your rifle bore. You definitely should not be low at 50 yards-you have a problem. Here is how it should be.
25 yards-1/4 to 1/2 inch low
50 yards-1/4 to 1/2 inch high
100 yards-1-2 inches high
200 yards-1-4 inches low
It is highly unlikely you are 2 inches low at 50, and high at 100. If you are, then you have a problem. Remember the higher thescope, the greater the difference in trajectory at short distances(because of line of sight). Also high scopes tend to have more mounting, or moving problems.
If you want to shoot 300 yards, then add 1 1/2to 2 inches at 100 yards. Tom.

With a 1 1/2" sight height, you should be roughly .19" LOW at 50 yards. At 40 yards, it should be .37" LOW. This is with Remington 150 Balistic tip at 2910fps at the muzzle, and a zeroed at 100 yards.

50 yards -0.19"
100 yards 0
150 yards -1.00"
200 yards -3.29"
250 yards -6.94"
300 yards -12.15"

You can get the ballistics program I used here, for free.

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/remington_shoot_ballistics_software.asp

It is all based on Remington factory loadings, but will get you into the ballpark if you use something else.

I wanted to quick zero my gun in at 100 yards when I first got it b/c it was right before season and I needed to do it quick. Should I sight it in at the 150 yards that I see all ammo is zeroed in at on the ammo manufacturers websites or is 100 ok? I'm new at this so I'm wondering what the difference is.

I also noticed on the Remington website that they used a 24" barrell in all testing with a couple exceptions and their ballistics show they are a little better than Winchester. My barrell is 22" so how much of a difference should I expect with Remington ammo? It didn't say what barrell they tested their ammo with on the Winchester sight and I have somesuper x's in 150 gr.

I've heard that when abullet first comes out of a gunat the muzzel it first dips slightly then it raises slightly. Is this true? And would this make my shots at 40-50 yards normalif it is alittle low? Again, I'm new to this and any help would be appreciated. Mostly, I'm just wonderingifit would be best to sight my gunat 150 yards like most ballistic charts show.

I'm shooting a Rem. 700 BDL if it matters. Ballistics info weren't on the Winchester box, but I think they were on the Remington box. What would give me the best results? Thanks again.

Ifor one only use the "ballistic charts" as a general guide. There are just to many variables in the equation. You can have all the charts and web chair quarterbacks say this and that but untilYOU ACTUALLY GO OUT AND SHOOT THE PARTICULAR LOAD IN YOUR GUN it's all guess work.

Case in point......... you said the rifle is shooting right on at 100 yards but an inch or two at 40-50 yards. Well it didnt take long for folks to chime in and say that it's not supposed to be> I have no doubt you are being honest so whjat gives? Real world experince or something a chart says.

I am in no way trying to demean anyone here it's just that over many years of shooting my experinces tell me to shoot loads at various distances to tell what really happens, besides it's great practice to do so. Not saying that anyone here would do it but there are some that have never shot over 100 yds and then have no problem when hunting taking shots they shouldnt have.

Well, sorry for my rambling on.....

If you're on at 100 yds don't worry about an inch or two at 50. A rule I've used for many years is to sight in 3" high at 100 yds, and don't hold over a deer size target clear out to 300 yds. Most people over estimate distance anyway. As for the difference between a 24" barrel and a 22" will not be an issue, as you or an animal wont be able to detect it, probably not over 150 fps. Balistic charts are a good source of information, but only as a guideline. To many things affect a bullet's flight for ballistics to be an exact science, distance above sea level, shooting up or down hill, the temperature at the time you are shooting. The best thing you can do is practice, and find a load you like and stick with it. Different brands of ammo even with the same bullet weight can require a new sightin as they often group quiet differently.

Sight it 1 1/2 inches high at 100 yards. That will put you well in the kill zone out to 225 yards.
