IMO, it all boils down to what fits your hand better and is more comfortable to shoot and how much experience you've had shooting a handgun. A large framed .45 is hard to beat. But in a compact, may bea bitmuch for you to handle if you are not used to shooting it.
Then again, getting back to experience, for self defense, expecially at night, dark, how well are you going to shoot and hit what you're aiming at because you problably won't see the sights. In this case you would be better off with a 12 or 20 ga short barreled shotgun loaded with #5 or #6 bird shot.

true i doubt i buy a compact no need for it and i like the big frame gun guest it is because i am a big guy.
I was at a gun show and a women tried to sell me a holster that was made to slide around your chest made from some kind of velcro matrail.
I said will it hold a 9mm full size gun up.
She said sure then hads me a 38 snub nose. light gun i could not even get my hand around. I told her i did not like carrying pee shooters around.

The .45 doesn't have much in the way of recoil unless you are shooting a one of the tiny 'pocket' 1911s with 1 1/2" barrels and small grips.

If you use good form and allow the mass of your body to absorb the recoil instead of just your hands and wrists, you can control muzzle flip very well. Even with that said, my split times are still better with a 9mm, but my first shot is a lot faster with a .45 1911 (mostly due to pistol design). If I had to choose between a faster follow up shot and a harder hitting first shot, I'd take the harder hitting shot every time. If you can't hit a torso sized target at 5-10 yards, you just need more practice, and probably not much at that.

I don't see capacity as being an issue. If you can't get out of a situation with 7-8 .45 rounds and a spare mag, you should have had a better plan in the first place, like not being in that situation.

I carry a Glock 23, it's a .40, nothing wrong with a .45, but I wouldn't trust my life to a 9mm...

I would to a .40, a .45 a .357with at least a 4 inch barrel and 125 Hollowpoints and a 12 gauge...

I keep the .40 with me and in the truck, the .357 and 12 gauge in the house...

I'm 6' 5", weigh 250, with the 23, I can slip in in the back of my pants, wear a light jacket or pull my shirt out and you would never know I had it...A .40 lets you carry a double stacked mag and the handle doesn't feel too thick, with a double stacked .45, it is thicker and harder to conceal...

take the best of both worlds!! 40 s&w or 357 sig!!! more hitting power than the 9mm....and better mag capacity than the 45.

hard to beat....

most important thing is ALWAYS shot placement....dont matter what your shooting...if you cant put em where they need to be, size isnt gunna matter much...

I didn't vote. I see a niche for a 9mm,a 40, and a 45. I have all three, and I like the 9mm because its cheap to shoot, with getting back on target fast very easy. The 40 is the gun I've shot the most critters with, and feel the most comfortable with. My 45 and I haven't spent much time together yet, and its really expensive to shoot compared to a 9mm or a 40.
Good point.
4. 9mm ammo is less expensive, so you arelikely to fire more practice roundswith it. Practice makes you more comfortable and confident witha particulargun and therefore more effective in a life-threatening situation.

The case for the 9mm:
1. The 9mm is more accurate, so you more likely to hit your target;
2. The 9mm has less recoil, so your follow-up shots are faster; and
3. The 9mm will carry more rounds, so you can fire more rounds.

Those are three large tactical advantages over the .45. If you use hollow-point bullets there is plenty of stopping power and energy transfer to the target, so it is not wimpy.
