Default Rifle ?

I'm in the market for a rifle, I have only owned a .22 mag. rifle. Where I hunt we can only use shot gun, but I got invited to deer hunt the next county over this year and it is a rifle county. I like the Rugar Hawkeye, but I can't decide between a .25-06 or .270 win. I'M A NOVICE RIFLEMAN. I would like some suggestions on the matter.

Both cartridges that you mention will work fine. I would look at which cartridge in in supply in your area and go with that one. That way you can get enough ammo to get range time in to get to know your limitation on what you can do with the rifle. I would think that a 270win. or 30-06 would be in most Ma and Pop stores. Once you get the rifle get a good scope and get some range time in.

Either would be fine for deer, provided you do your part. Seems that .25-06 ammunition isn't as widely available in some areas, while the .270 ammois usually VERY available.

If it has been decied strickly between those 2 cal. then I would go with the .270. It will provide greater hunting options for you in the future.

Either would do fine, though may I suggest you look at other rifles aside from Ruger.....sure consider them, but look at/consider others.....

As to the calibers.....I think the .270 would be more versatile than the .25-06, but a .30-06 would be even more so, though I'm not sure you have any ambitions of hunting anything bigger than deer.....? on elk....I'd much prefer a .30-06 to a .270 or .25-06, though if you do become a elk nut.....you may be purchasing another rifle.

.25-06 is a nice round, esp for deer, as is the .270, max loading for a .25 is about 120gr, where as a .270 is 150 or 160grs, which on a bigger animal is a considerable addition IMO.

Though in my .270 I use 130gr, to m this is your ideal .270 load, and in a .25-06 the ideal load is usually 115gr or 117, or if for something lighter 100gr, though I feel the 115/117gr loads are perfect for the .25-06

If you don't own a rifle, aside from that .22, I think the .270 would probably be my choice, get a .270 though I wouldn't limit myself to just Ruger, look around, see what you like best.

as already said, both will work, but if it were my choice the 270 would be automatic... I really believe it is a much more versitile gun all the way up to elk and down to ground squirrels...

That would be a great choice in a rifle. Buy the 270 and it will last you your life time, and then the life time of who you leave it to. Tom.
