Band-aid on a broken leg....

Won't pull it all out and what's left hazes the finish after a dose of rain/snow.

No need to do it anyway, so why bother with the agravation...............

Put a coat of walnut stain on last night. I'll do one or two more and then go back with the tru-oil.

you guys love your stain .i only like to use 1 or 2 coats of stain. i like to let the natural beauty of the wood shine through. be careful sanding because you can screw up and take the detail and fine edges for fitting to the metal and recoil pad. ive found with true oil you can get a workable finish hand rubbing each coat after about 4 or five coats. i never just slap on a coat because you will get runs. i very lightly sand with 0000 steel wool between clear coats. it helps to smooth out any imperfections in coats. if you dont you will be locking in all the imperfections if not careful. i just rinse the stock off after each sanded coat. there should be no steel wool flakes on the stock after that.

It's what gets embedded in the surface that's the problem....

When starting with a perfect surface, and actually doing a real hand rubbed finish...there's no imperfections to fret.
