Default .308 & 130 grn bullets on deer ?

Has any used the .308 and 130 grn bullets on deer ? I was going to buy a .270 for longer shots but looking ar some load books and an article by John Wooters suggest this bullet will give near .270 vel in a .308 Is the bullet accuate enough and tough enough to kill a good sized deer at 350 yds ? Might save me the cost of a new rifle.

You really are losing much by staying with a 150 grain bullet out of a 308 Win. If you want to try a 130 grain, I say go for it. You can also load 125s depending on whether or not your rifle will shoot them well.

.358 the 308 win with a 130 gr bullet has a point blank range of 265yds on a max load and a 270win has a point blank range of 350 yds on the max load with a 130gr bullet . The 308 has 1100 ft lbs @ 300 yards and the 270 win has 1700 ft lbs . That don't sound close to me .This is from Sierra's manual.

If you are going to take shots out to 300 yards I would go with the 165 btsp's which have high ballistic coefficient to be less affected by wind. These bullets will retain alot more energy than the 130 gr bullets. Instead of worrying about shooting flat- which I think is overrated- practise alot with the rifle at different ranges to get a good feeling for the rifle and load. The .308 chambered in a quality rifle should be plenty accurate for hunting to 350 yards- in fact its accurate way beyond the distance that the bullet will have enough energy for a clean kill.It just depends on if the shooter has the knowledge and experience to make the shot or know not to take the shot if conditions aren't right.
