If your talking about a 742, basic cleanning is all you should attempt if your not famillure with the workings of the gun. If it is in nasty shape, I would recomend takeing it to your local gunsmith to tear down, clean and inspect. If you want to learn how to do it, I would recomend getting a teadown and re-assembly manual befor you attempt it, there is too many steps involved to type it all down and make it for you to understand!.

jlsheer, Try http://www.remington.com/library/downloads/owners_manuals.aspand click on the "Request and Obsolete Owners Manual". I did this yesterday looking for the manual for my 550-1. So far I only received and email saying they have received my request. It's worth a try. Also, there are exploded diagrams avail on the internet, but, I agree with devil dog with being familiar. On another note, you can always use the exploded diagram and try to disassemble / reassemble. Worst case, you will have to take to gunsmith for reassembly.
