lol I suppose uncle matt is correct, UNLESS you ask it to perform flawlessly while wet, grimey or shoot under 1.5" groups @ 100yds!
If you are just gonna go out and deer hunt a couple of times this season and aren't going to shoot over 200yds and you can properly clean the rifle then sure it will be acceptable.
All you need is a Tasco or Bushnell atop it with some see thrus and you will a genuine "Mississippi Woundamatic"!!!

I don't know. My 742 in '06 will shoot a 3/4" group off a bench at 100 yds with factory Rem ammo and over the years, I've had very few whitetail shots over 200 yards. And I can honestly say, I've never had a jam on any of my Rem autos. So from my experience, I'd say take it and good luck.

I had one in 30'06 I had bought new in the mid 70's. It shot OK, usually under 2" at 100. It would jam from time to time but usually it was if it was not well cleaned and the excess oil wiped off. Two of the longest kills I've had were with that gun, one at 215 yards the other at 200 yards, less than 1 minute separating the two shots. Both 1 shot kills and only one got up and ran, but only 20 yards.
I would clean it up good, sight it in and go hunting with it.

One other piece of advice: when loading the clip for it, stack the ammunition back in the clip. I had a model 7400 and it would jam every other shot if I didn't stack them in the back. As far as accuracy, mine did ok if I shot it and let it cool down between shots. IfI racked off a whole clip in quick succession, the bullets would "walk" up and to the right with each shot.

As ostdc said...keep it VERY clean. Good guns..I killed my first 15 or so deer with one. 180 gr Winchester Power Points rn's out of it put the deer on the ground quicker than anything I have ever used.

I have fired several 742s and 7400s.Groups ranged from 2" to 6" at 100 yards andmost of these guns had jammed at one time or another.
