Inherited one and wondering if it is worth sending to the smith. It is a late 1960's model. I have not shot it yet, it is filthy, but in very good shape. Not a scratch on it. Is this rifle a hunter or just a keeper ?

It's well worth cleaning up and if it shoots good afterward, hunt with it. There's millions of em out there and most shoot, some need work to be reliable-usually in gas system. Don't expect great accuracy however.

My very first rifle was a Remington 742 Woodsmaster Carbine in 30-06. I still own and shoot it today. While I do not hunt with it anymore as I found other passions, this always was a good shooter. Being as old as it is, you have one that is milled and not stamped. The newer models tended to jam. These old Woodsmasters are bullet proof. All the times I shot deer with it I never had a jam. I have a scope mounted on mine and without a doubt it is a great shooting rifle. I have shot deer with it at over 200 yards. Mine likes Remington 150 gr Core Lock and it shoots them beautiful. I'd clean that rifle up and hunt the devil out of it... Good luck with the rifle.
