Comes down to the rifle really, not so much the chambering. The 7mm08 comes in a short action so slightly shorter and lighter rifle. Makes a difference if you walk much not so much if you only treestand hunt. No deer will ever know which round killed it.

I own both ..... in fact I have been shooting both cartridges exactly the same lenght of time. I bought a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in .270 and a Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08 on the same day. I bought them both about 17 years ago. The .270 is a long action round, and thus comes in a gun that is a little longer and heavier. And even though that is true, it will still have a little more recoil than a 7mm-08. It has a little more power and distance capability ( flatter shooting ) at 350 + yards. But both are good to 400 + yards.

The 7mm-08 is a great short action round. It comes in short to vary short guns. Something as small as a Ruger M77 Compact is a super handy short gun, but the recoil will come up some because of the reduction in weight. It will come close to the .270. If I had to choose one over the other, I would choose the 7mm-08. I love my .270 also, but the 7mm-08 has brought down most of my deer. I own several more guns, of various calibers, and it gets carried more than any other gun I own..... there is a reason for that...... I have seen one of my bucks do a flip when I hit him with the 7mm-08. It will accurately shoot farther that you are capable of shooting. If you need to step up to .270 power, then buy some Hornady light magnum ammo , and you have the same ballistics, and ammo is more readily available for the 7mm-08 than some folks would have you believe..... I say 7mm-08 would suit you fine.

Over the years, I have hunted and killed deer with many cartridges, including but not limited to the 30-06, 280 Rem.,270 Win.,& 7mm Rem. Mag. About four years ago I bought my first 7-08. I love it. I see no reason to carry anything else anymore. It has become my go-to deer rifle. I do handload, but that should not stop a non-handloader from buying a 7-08. Some others on here would have you believe it is somewhat hard to get. I just don't feel that's true from my experiences. The 270 is certainly a fine cartridge. No doubt about it, and there are lots of them out there killing deer on a regular basis. I simply have become a big 7-08 fan for several reasons, and see no reason to change.

I have killed a bunch with each. With that being said I hunt in WV also and parked the 270 to carry the 7-08. Is one better than the other? Thats splitting hairs and the piles of dead deer wouldnt know the difference.....but when it comes time to hit the WV hills in November I will be toting the 7-08...as are tons of other people these days. Its a new round comparatively speaking and has started catching like wildfire the last 6-8 years. I have made 300 yard ridge to rideg shots with both so you give up nothing with either except cheaper ammo with the 270...

I have to go with the 7m-08. I own 2( but I also own a 300wsm and am purchasing a 270wsm). The 270 is a great round but it kicks hard enough to take the fun out of working up a new round. 7mm-08 ammo is widely available. Also, in my opinion, one should never buy a box of production ammo and assume it will shoot the same as the last box you bought. Take some time finding the right load for your gun, then buy 3 or 4 boxes and that should last you several seasons. I prefer "premium" ammo or custom because it does not vary nearly as much round to round. I have friends who will spend $1500 on their rifle and scope, $5000 on a guided hunt, and then brag about saving a dollar on a bullet. Go figure.

These are both winning cartridges but there's no way around the simple fact the 270 will give you the most bang for your buck. It hasn't been one of the world's hunting favorites for almost a century for no reason. I'll go with success.

7mm-08 for me! I own three, the latest in Browning BLR. Light, fast handling, and plenty of power for deer hunting. Nothing wrong with a .270, I just like short light rifles....
