RE: winchester 1896
I'm not sure Winchester made a Mod. 1896. I'm familiar with the Mod.s 1890, '94,'95,'97 and a Mod. 1886. But I can't say I've heard of a Mod. '96. Is this a shotgun or a rifle?

If it's a mod. '97 shotgun, and in good condition,it's safe to shoot with any 2 3/4" shell. They were very strong actions. I've got one made in 1911. It's my favorite rabbit gun. I shot turkey loads through it for years, and shot sporting clays with it a couple of times.I wouldn't shoot steel shot through it though. They had very tight chokes, and you might ruin the muzzle trying to get steel shot through it.

Is it a pump with a hammer? if so, it's a 1897 Winchester. Depending on condition, they are becoming pretty collectable, they are also the only pump you can use in cowboy action shooting. Norinco is making a copy now.
