the 540s are supposed to be the "el grande" 45-70 commecially loaded round. definatly overkill on deer. and i would also reccomend a lighter faster bullet to flatten out that trajectory

my mothers cousin uses those round syou stated. when he hunts in alaska. don't know what he uses it on.
300gr. JHP are better suited for your shots that are under 50yds 99% of the time in maine.

Those 540 grain loads would be great in Africa, but are overkill in North America for anything smaller than Alaska-Yukon moose or Kodiak bear!!

Keep yore powder dry!!

i use the 300gr jhp in my 45-70. anything more for deer is unnecessary. the 300gr leaves a huge hole in both deer and hogs.

The 350 grain Hornady round nose at about 1900 fps will jerk the world out from under bears. I don,t know when I would ever need a bigger round that that. I shot a 550 lb Black Bear with one, he hit the ground so hard he almost made a crater and never even wiggled. Marlin 1895 Lever gun.

first off let me say the marlin 1895 g is probably my favorite, most accurate gun ( out of the box ) that i have ever shot. killed 4 deer with the gun this year. I am with just about every one else when they say you need no bigger than the 300 gr. for anything I've come across. But from a man who acts like a boy. SURE IS FUN TO SHOOT THE BIG STUFF AIN'T IT!!!!!!!!!!!! My advise hunt with the 300 grain.

If GOD didn't like hunters he would've never let the 1895 g be created.
