Sorry that's theoutfitter model, not the guide gun. I have no real use for it, other than shootin big holes in things, would be good back up for spring archery bear hunts.

RE: Thoughts on the Marlin 444
Jed, I had a marlin outfitter briefly in that caliber with the ported barrel. A friend sold it to me to buy the winchester big timber carbine in 444. When he got the winchester to his house and worked the action and trigger he realized he made a big mistake and I sold the 444 back to him. If you use it and handload use 300+ grain bullets and it should hit like a ton of bricks. This guy shot a 300 lb hog in NC with it and it did a pretty impressive job on it. Recoil was moderate and it is a very accurate rifle with or without scope sights. Nice smooth action and a great trigger. It is an easy gun to carry and It shoots big holes in things and would be the "perfect" black bear gun IMHO.

If it's ported, that would be my only complaint... my buddy has a Marlin in 44 mag, that is ported, and you can't shoot it without some serious ear protection... it is just too loud.
If I were to get a "bigger" lever gun than my 375, it would probably be the 444... I don't think I need a 45-70, although I really like that caliber. I don't know, I guess it would be a toss-up.

if i'm correct you should be able to shoot about 1/4 -1/2 mile with it or about 4 city blocks. it makes for a good sniper rifle shooting 280 grn bullets. but i would have it for HDO (home defence only)<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Jed, i have had a couple of 444 first the 444s and now i have the 444 outfitter. For hunting in heavy cover or crowded wood it a great cartridge. Most deer drop on the spot. In response to your post on a handload i have always used the hornady 265 gr flat nose. The first load I tried was 44.4 gr of IMR 4198 and I have used this load every since 1974.
One word of caution the 444 outfitter is ported and very ,very loud wear some ear protection.

Outfitter is good.. I shoot the sierra 220 gr full profile jacket at 2300 fps, shot a 7/8 of an inch group at 100 yds last saturday. If zeroed at 100yds will shoot only 20 inches low at 250yds and still has 869ft-lbs of energy left.. This cartrige is definatly not limited to the 100yd range
