thats just the reason whyi dont want a 270, everybody has one. im not saying its a bad cartrige or the 25-06 is superior, but i would just like something a little different.
Now you're talkin'! How 'bout 7x57, .280, 7mm SAUM, 7mm RUM, 8mm Rem Mag, 8x57, .338-'06, .35 Whelen...

Hey, why not a .270 Wby Mag? Everybody may have a .270, but not many have the Wby Mag. Talk about "laser flat"! And you'd have oomph aplenty for elk.

There are plenty o' different cartridges out there. What else are you looking for aside from 1) laser flat, and 2) something not everybody has?

Oh...and don't forget the depleted uranium rounds for armor piercing capability. That should do the trick

Here are some thoughts from the State of Alaska:

http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntalaska.firearms

They echo the sentiments about not needing .50 BMG's with depleted uranium rounds. However, they don't seem to mention the .25-06.

Prudence & reason. Good companions, them.

Maybe there is a reason everyone has a .270? But I can understand wanting to be different. Im looking for a short chambered (2 1/2") 16 gauge Browning A-5. Who the heck want's to hunt with a 70 year old 16 gauge? ME! Instead of going lighter than the 270, I'd go heavier. Maybe 280? I do like the idea of some of the oddball Weatherby calibers out there. Id keep the 25-06 for deer only, buts thats just me.....

Then get an 280 Rem., and you will have something "different" andSTILL have something one he!! of a lot better for elk than a 25-06....
