Help Me Choose a Caliber

RE: Help Me Choose a Caliber
I have been looking for the same thing. Conclusion I came to is 7mm-08 is
the best choice for a factory round that is readily available. Its a great deer
killer out to 250 - 300 yards and is one of the most accurate hunting
rounds out there.
Second choice is 308, however, with factory ammo the recoil is definitely
higher. If you go to lighter bullets, accuracy suffers, Even with handloads
you need to go to a bullet with higher BC for that 200 plus yd accuracy.
That means a 160gr bullet for the 308 but you can get the same in a 120-140
with the 7mm-08. Bullet weight in the accurate rounds reduces recoil by about
20% with an equally flat shooting long range load. With the managed recoil loads,
the 308 might be a bit tougher contender, but I would still pick the 7mm08
given the same weight and design rifle.
243 is great, but not as versitile if I get a chance to hunt heavier game as
the 7mm-08. 270 sucks - excessive muzzle blast, recoil, and big heavy
cartridges for no really good purpose for what I have in mind. 30-06 and
the various magnums - likewise. A howitzer-like muzzle blast will make me
unwelcome in some of my favorite private properties that I manage to get
invitations to hunt. Besides, just how dead can you make a deer?

22-250 for deer at 600 yards???? There's probably less energy left in that 22-250 at 600 yards than there is in a 22 mag at 50 yards. I wouldn't think either should be used on deer.

It is rather nice to have a discussion, and carry on a conversation about a topic without feeling kicked in the teeth. Everyone can and does have an opinion ..... but we don't have to get mad when others may disagree.... and I for one am not always right ... most of the time maybe, but not ALL the time.

I'm glad we're all basically saying the same thing in different way,and agreeing at it also. Too many people get wrapped up into certain things (brand/caliber,etc)INCLUDING ME,and wind up arguing.

My thoughts, experience, and knowledge don't usually change-it confirmswhat was previously thought. There's a few things I don't condone, and shooting at a deer at 600 yards with a .22 centerfire is one. Not at all like ridgerunner that spends hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars for skill and equipment that's easily up to the job. His yardages seem excessive and indeed some are to me but he don't take a shot until he's 110% of a clean kill so his actual shot/kill percentages are a LOT higher than most. When we had M40s to use,we basically did same thing, but that's another story and aclosed book-with ME anyway.
