Yep, I'm pretty much a spot and stalk stick thrower. (Guess that falls short of the .338 wm minimum by a bit. )

Kodiak, I am impressed and that is a large bear. I have no doubt a bow could kill a large animal, but how long does it take for him to fall down?? I would personally worry that if he caught wind of me he would bring me down, and the hunter would become the hunted. After you shoot what precautions do you take to avoid from being detected?

No, actually there's a lot of misdirection and naivete in that statement, if he can't handle a .308, he can't handle the howitzer and no amount of bigger makes up for better. ipscshooter got it right on.

That's why good outfitters require hunters to shoot at their range when they get into camp; so the guide knows that the client is competent.
You are absolutely correct. I am nieve , I have absolutely no clue what I'm talking about.

(the rest was deleted because I wrote it at 5:00 of a bad day, and thought it best to remove before I'm thought of badly.)

While guiding hunters a few years back a guy showed up with a new 340 Weatherby which he claimes that he had shot often and well. Trouble is, he didn't even have the right shells and the scope was only bore sighted at the local gun shop. I had part of a box of shells (He had brought 300 Weatherby shells),He missed several shots the first day and on the second day his son killed his deer for him with his 270. Thank God it was not a big bear. After that, no hunter left camp without test firing his rifle at my range.

He walked about 50 yards and fell over dead after taking one arrow through the heart at 18 yards. He looked right at me when I drew on him so he knew I was there but just didn't know what I was or didn't care. But I still stayed put until I knew he was down and then went back to camp to get the rifle before tracking him. Like I said before, no amount of "bigger" makes up for "better". Even a bow will effectively kill a bear but it has to be in the hands of someone that appreciates its limitations and is willing to live within them.

I bet a bow with a Muzzy 4 blade makes a bigger hole thru a bear than a 300 Ultra Mag
